How to Keep Your Pet Flea Free

Trying to keep our pets safe from fleas and other unwanted pests can be a challenge, especially when they interact and play with other animals, run around the fields on a daily basis and take a trip to the kennels or groomer. There are, however, a number of different things that can be done to help prevent your pet from catching fleas and keep them healthy and happy. 

Prepare for Flea Season

Peak flea season hits during the summer, when temperatures are high, and fleas can breed and grow at a rapid rate. This makes it really important to protect your pet when the warmer months arrive to ensure you have a head start and avoid those pesky visitors. Keep the House Clean

This will ensure any eggs or larvae are removed from the house and can therefore no longer attach themselves to your pet, of allow fleas to grow in your home. 

Similarly, you need to make sure you’re washing your pets bedding frequently too. Wash your pets bed in warm, soapy water at least once a month, with a good vacuum every week to remove any loose dirt.

If your pet has brought fleas, flea eggs or flea larvae into your home and you vacuum it up, then you still run the risk of these infecting your hoover bag and growing in there, which in turn will bring them back into your home. 

Comb Your Pet

By combing your pets fur frequently, you can keep an eye on their skins condition, fur condition and whether or not they have fleas. It can be really beneficial to comb your pets fur frequently, not only to make them look good but also to uncover any hidden guests that may be residing in the warmth of your pet’s hair. There are some really good flea combs available on the market with useful guides on how to use them safely and properly on your pet, without causing irritation or discomfort.

If you think your pet may have fleas or flea eggs may be growing within their fur, you need to take your pet to the vets to have them checked over. The vet can then suggest the best flea treatment for them to use and help get rid of those unwanted pests.
